So the weather didn't totally cooperate with us in Michigan last weekend, but I can't complain. I hear that raging storm early Saturday morning in Chicago was a monster. Random clouds didn't stop us though.
Drinks, drinks and more drinks! What's a girls weekend without a few tasty beverages. Um, let me tell you, sweet tea vodka and lemonade is my new go-to summer refresher!
Boat rides! Around the lake. During the day. To take in the sunset. You name it! (Nope, not a picture of us, the house we stayed in or my friend's actual boat.) We also went into the lake and floated around. That's big for me. I don't often do lakes. I think they're gross and have fish. Peer pressure, I guess.
Wineries! Four of them to be exact, over the course of the weekend. We hit up Contessa and Karma Vista in Coloma, Michigan, which is the town where we stayed. Karma Vista had some decent wines. I bought a bottle of their Starry Starry White and Watusi Red. The red is said to be an excellent starter for sangria. The Contessa wines weren't that good and the woman on the bottles, all over the tasting room, etc. sorta freaked us out. (Visit the website and you'll see what I mean.)
Since it was cloudy/rainy on Sunday, we packed it up in the morning and made an adventure out of the day before heading back to the city. Our first stop was Tabor Hill Winery in Buchanan, Michigan. I have to say their wines were the tastiest! I bought the Classic Demi Sec (served in the White House and among Bob Hope's favorite wines) and the Traminette. Both are semi-dry white wines. I love me some white wine in the summer!
After Tabor Hill, we drove to the Round Barn Winery, Distillery and Brewery in Baroda, Michigan. I loved the vibe at this place. And while the wines were good, the beer and bourbon were to die for! I walked away with a six-pack of the Cocoa Stout and Summer Wheat. My sister bought a growler of the Grape Expectations brew. It was delicious! I hope she has some left when I go to her place this weekend.
And no trip from Michigan to Chicago is complete without a final lunch stop for a legendary burger from Redamak's in New Buffalo. If you haven't had one of their burgers, you haven't lived.
And that's it. Weekend over. Back to the grind! I'm entering a detox program and getting some sleep this week, for sure!

My co-worker from Atlanta was JUST telling me about New Buffalo. Now I'm on a mission to visit because everytime I get on the phone with him he asks if I've visited yet.
We didn't even notice the Storm Saturday morning- it was the one Saturday night that really caused us trouble! I was just looking at a MI wine tour from the local park district, and was thinking about doing it ourselves. Thanks for the tips!
On our trip back from TX recently, there were some wineries in Missouri and IL that we didn't get to stop at- but I picked up a few bottles - go figure- at the gas station. Stone Hill Winery was fantastic (in MO)! We haven't tried the one from IL yet.
Such a fun weekend. Who knew the Midwest had vineyards? That sounds like pure bliss.
